Asda has joined the growing number of grocers introducing new measures in stores and online to combat panic buying as a result of the coronvirus pandemic.
The grocer’s chief executive Roger Burnley said in a letter online that Asda has “implemented a limit on the number of items that can be purchased to make sure everyone can get what they need”.
Asda has also made the decision to temporarily close 24-hour stores between midnight and 6am to better assist with restocking shelves, in a similar move to Tesco which reduced its opening hours earlier in the week.

“I wanted to personally reassure you that we are working really hard to keep our shelves stocked and serving your community,” Burnley said.
The grocer is “working around the clock” to try keep products available, including hand sanitizer, cleaning products and baby formula.
“I’d also ask that you try to shop responsibly and not buy more than you need so that everyone, including the vulnerable, have access to the essentials.”
Asda is also going to temporarily close its cafes and pizza counters to “free up room for colleagues” in its warehouses and keep shelves stocked.
Burnley asked shoppers to be patient with colleagues “as they try to do their very best during these unprecedented times”.
He also asked its cleaners to focus on cleaning more frequently in “high traffic areas”.
Asda said its demand for online shopping has increased and asked shoppers to be flexible in delivery or collection times.

Unfortunately, as one of your older (76) yet long standing customers, I have been unable to book slots easily. Then even when I’ve managed to place an order, half of the items aren’t available! So, despite being told to stay in, I’ve got to find my way to the nearest shop (the Co-op) and get my shopping there.
So much for your control of the shelves!
Ive had the same problem an ive got copd server an just come out of hospital after having pneumonia ordered shopping over a week ago to find nearly the day before it was due hafe if not more than all my items out of stock yet was not notified of this as i placed the order absolutely horrendous an now in the same positon having to wait an hope my next order comes an not out of stock again

Are Asda going to have designated tines for 70+ shoppers? My wife won’t shop in any other supermarket.
My work is closing down tomorrow and I’ve only just been made aware as I’ve been on holiday all week.
Will Asda be taking staff on as I’d be able to start immediately and live in the area.
You would be best checking with the local store not posting here. Many supermarkets and Amazon are hiring pickers and drivers to cope with demand.

I could not get a delivery for two weeks, so had to do a click and collect, I notice that some of the things I ordered are not available, I only know this because I had to amend my order. Not too happy about the fact Asda don’t advise people beforehand, seems a bit of sharp practice to me, as many would probably cancel and go to a local shop instead. Also click and collect say no bags provided , so social distancing is a non starter as you have to faff about taking the stuff from them to put it in your own bag. This seems totally against government advice, and I am also in a vulnerable group too.
