Habitat is reportedly set to close its flagship store in London and relaunch in Sainsbury’s and Argos as part of an overhaul.

The Sainsbury’s-owned furniture retailer is closing down its Tottenham Court Road store early next year along with its Finchley Road store as Sainsbury’s carries out a brand overhaul, Retail Week reported.

Habitat is set to become Sainsbury’s main home and furniture brand, replacing all products currently in stores.

It is currently trialling a small collection, with a further rollout planned for spring 2021 and the full range released by the end of the year.

The new ranges will be available in Sainsbury’s and Argos stores, as well as online on Argos’ and Habitat’s websites.

Habitat is currently planning on creating furniture display areas in the bigger-sized Sainsbury’s stores.

Habitat stores in Westfield, Brighton and Leeds will relaunch as showrooms in spring 2021 in an effort to replace the Tottenham Court Road store.

Habitat is also trialling a video consultation service where customers can be connected with experts in-store to shop remotely.

Sainsbury’s plans to broaden the price range of its Habitat products to make it more accessible, with prices starting as low as £1.50.

Sainsbury’s trading director for clothing, home and furniture Rebecca Hitchings said Sainsbury’s has already got big market share across home and furniture.

“We will just bring it all under the Habitat brand,” she said.

Sainsbury’s and Argos’ home and furniture business is worth £1.4 billion with Habitat accounting for £40 million.

  1. So in other words they are slapping the Habitat brand on any old cheap tat they sell, maybe they saw that in the name. It used to be a brand known for quality but Sainsbury’s hadn’t had a clue what to do with it.

    • I agree, same thoughts with Argos. They have no idea how to run these brands and have given up. Soon the Habitat and Argos brands will be mothballed in further “streamlining” with jobs lost.

  2. I think Sainsbury’s have kept the brand standards so far. The concern is that if it’s a wholesale replacement of Sainsbury’s Home then the entry level quality & price will need to be lower to fit.

      • Haven’t looked at the Habitat website for a few months But today can see the range is huge including loads of cheap tat.
I started googling to find out what had happened & now see that it must be all of the Argos merchandise they are rebranding.
What a great shame. I wouldn’t trust buying anything from them now. RIP Habitat.

  3. I only just went on to the ‘new Argos habitat sit and thought straight away something wrong’ The saw the Argos logo…. The whole thing looks as cheap as chips..
I’ve been a habitat buyer all of my adult life
Not only in my home but in my hairdressing business
    I’m absolutely gutted- it’s ruined

  4. I have always bought good quality bedding from Habitat – went on the new website and the bedding is now cheap and nasty. Really low thread count and childish design. Lighting is also horrific – again cheap and nasty. Agree with other posters, it’s ruined.
